The Elite Circuit: Ivy League vs. Oxbridge vs. G5

So you got into both an Ivy and Oxford. Or maybe it's between Columbia and LSE. And now you're freaking out trying to figure out which one is actually better for your career. I get it. I've been there. And honestly? The answer is way more complicated than what the rankings tell you.

Let me tell you about my friend Mike. He had this choice back in 2019 — Harvard or Oxford for a master's in public policy. He spent weeks making pro-con lists, asking professors, reading forums. In the end he picked Oxford. Not because it was "better" but because he liked the idea of living in London. And you know what? It worked out fine. He's now at the UN. But I also know someone who picked Columbia over LSE and she's at McKinsey now. So like... it's really not about the name.

The thing about Ivy League schools is, they're not just schools. They're like this massive network that follows you everywhere. I remember visiting a friend at Cornell and he was like "basically every CEO in America either went here or their dad did." And he wasn't totally wrong. The Ivy network is real. If your goal is Wall Street or Silicon Valley or like, being president or whatever, the Ivy brand opens doors that don't even have handles. It's unfair honestly but it's real.

But here's the thing people don't tell you about Ivies — they're huge. Like really huge. You're not gonna get that intimate tutorial experience. You're in lecture halls with 300 other kids. And the competition is brutal. Like I knew someone at Penn who said the library at 3am on a Saturday was more packed than any bar. That's not healthy. But if you can survive it, you come out pretty tough.

Oxbridge is like the opposite. It's small, it's old, it's weird. The tutorial system — where you meet with a professor one-on-one or in groups of two every week — that's actually insane when you think about it. Like you're literally sitting in a room with a world expert arguing about your essay for an hour. You can't hide. You can't coast. You either do the reading or you look like an idiot in front of someone who wrote the textbook. That pressure is different from Ivy pressure. It's more personal, more intense in a different way.

But Oxbridge has its own problems though. The class thing is real. I've heard stories from friends who went there — if you didn't go to a certain type of private school, you feel it. The slang, the traditions, the way people talk about their summer houses. It's not as bad as it used to be apparently but it's still there. And if you're international, especially from Asia, you might feel like an outsider for a while.

The G5 schools in London — LSE, Imperial, UCL — they're kind of the best of both worlds. You get the London experience which is unmatched honestly. Like being able to intern at a bank or a tech company while studying? That's hard to beat. Imperial for STEM is incredible — their facilities are insane. LSE for economics and politics is world-class. UCL is massive and diverse. But they don't have the same "brand" power as Ivy or Oxbridge in some circles. Like if you're going back to China or India, the Ivy name still carries more weight unfortunately.

So what's the answer? I don't think there is one. It really depends on what you want. If you want the network and the brand recognition, go Ivy. If you want deep academic mentorship and don't mind the old-fashioned vibes, go Oxbridge. If you want to be in the middle of everything and have flexibility, go G5. Or honestly, just go where your gut tells you. Because at the end of the day, it's what you do while you're there that matters way more than the name on the diploma. Like I know someone who went to a state school and is now a partner at a VC firm. And I know Ivy grads who are still paying off loans and living with roommates at 35. So yeah. It's complicated.

But if you're really asking me to pick one? For most people, I'd say go to the place where you'll be happiest. Because if you're miserable for two years, no amount of brand prestige is gonna make up for that. Trust me on this one.
